So if your business is in a visual niche like food, recipes, arts & crafts, animals and pets, fashion, health, beauty, shopping, photography, home decor, travel etc. you NEED to be on Pinterest. It is fastest and most effective way to get your content out to the masses.

Pinterest makes your content go viral

When I say ‘viral’ you probably think of Twitter or a viral cat video.

But while Pinterest isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind, did you know that over 80% of pins are re-pins?

This is MASSIVE compared to only 1.4% of tweets that are re-tweeted.

Think about it, you are in the food business and share a “Easy Dinner Idea” recipe on Pinterest. A mom gathering dinner ideas for the family will probably see it and save the pin to her “Dinner Ideas” Board.

And when her friends see the recipe on their Pinterest feed, they might save it onto their Boards too. And that is how pins on Pinterest get repinned and repinned.

This re-pinning process keeps repeating itself bringing that pin in front of numerous users and onto many boards over the course of a few months!

The Pinterest effect lasts longer

And because the re-pinning process we just talked about, the average life span of a Pin is months!

This is much longer than a tweet which has a life span of only a few minutes.

That means each time you share a Pin you can reap the benefits of traffic for months to come.

Why use Pinterest for business?

While Pinterest started off as a platform for people to look for inspiration, the reality is that many people go on Pinterest to specifically seeking out ideas about new products to buy.

Did you know that 87% of Pinners have purchased a product because of Pinterest? And 93% (yes, almost all users) use Pinterest to plan purchases.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Shopify reported that users referred by Pinterest, spend an average of $80. That’s twice the spend of Facebook referrals.

Pinterest users are also more affluent and can afford to shop more. Half of Pinterest users earn $50k or greater per year with 10% of Pinterest users making more than $125k a year.

How to get started with Pinterest for Business

Step #1: Create a Pinterest business account (or convert your existing personal account to a business account)

To do this simply go to the Pinterest for business page and click “Join as a business” and provide:

  • Your email address,
  • Password,
  • Business name
  • Website,

You then choose which category your business falls into: professional, public figure, media, brand, retailer, online marketplace, local business, institution/non-profit etc.

Once you have reviewed the terms of service and privacy policy, click ‘Create account’, and then you are done!

If you already a personal account you can choose to convert it into a business account.

This is a good idea if you already have quite a few followers and don’t want to start from scratch.

Business accounts come with extra features like Pinterest Analytics which is vital for marketing. And don’t worry it is easy and free to convert your personal account to a

#2 Step: Complete your profile

Once you have your Pinterest Business account set up, you want to fill in your profile details to make your business look credible and appealing.

Simply log into your new Pinterest account, hover over the profile icon on the top right and click Settings.

First, you want to upload a profile photo. The optimal size is 165 x 165 pixels.

Next, you want to complete the About you section. This is where you tell people what your business is all about.

Then, click Save settings.

#3 Step: Confirm your website

This is an important step as this adds your logo to any Pins made from your website. It not only looks more professional but will boost your Pins rankings in search results.

Staying within Pinterest settings, simply scroll down to the Profile section and click Confirm website.

Then.copy and paste the provided text into the HTML of your website’s index page.

Click ‘Finish.Pinterest for business’.

When you website is confirmed you should get an email from Pinterest and start to see your logo or profile picture below the Pin.

# 4 Step: Create boards

As a start, you want to build out between 8-10 Boards that are related to your business.

To get started, go to your Pinterest profile, click the Boards tab, then click the red plus sign to create a new board.

You want to have a searchable name for each group board. So go with “easy dinner recipes” instead of something cute like “yummy dinner for the kiddos”.

Remember Pinterest is also a search engine, so real people are typing in search queries.

Think about what your target market is looking for and start Boards with descriptive names that match what people are searching for.

Once you have named your Board, click the pencil icon to enter more details.

This is where you want to explain what kind of pins you will be pining to the Board. Again remember, you want to include descriptions and phrases that your target market are searching for in Pinterest.

That will mean your Boards and Pins will rank higher in searches and reach more of your target market.

 

#5 Step: Start Pinning

Once you have your boards set up, it’s time to add some Pins.

Click on this icon at the top right-hand corner and get started:

You can either search Pinterest and add relevant pins to your Board or pin your own from your website.

 

Creating pins from your own blog or website (which link back to your blog/website), is a great way to direct traffic to your website!
