How to Build Backlinks for Free and Skyrocket your Traffic

how to build back links for free 1

Why are backlinks so important?

#1 Reason: Because Google says so!

The main reason why backlinks are so important are being Google says so.

Google’s goal is to provide the most useful search results for its users and to determine which pages are more useful, Google’s algorithm looks at backlinks.

I note that in the past the only signal Google looked at was backlinks, it did not matter what the standard of the backlinks were.

But this led to people going for quantity over quality.

Google has since updated its algorithm to penalize low quality backlinks. These are links from:

  • Low-ranking or disreputable websites,
  • Websites that are unrelated to your niche
  • Links to a source designed specifically to manipulate your Google rankings.

Quality backlinks on the other hand still send a strong signal to Google search crawler that your website is informative and also worth showing to more people.

So how do you build backlinks for free?

Building such quality backlinks will mean your content will be ranked higher on Google as it is considered more useful than pages with fewer backlinks.

This leads to higher organic ranking and more traffic.

And don’t we all want more traffic to our websites!

#2 Reason: Research shows that quality backlinks help you rank higher

There are some who believe that the Penguin algorithm update means that backlinks no longer matter to Google.

However, research still shows that quality backlinks do matter.

Matthew Barby, head of Growth & SEO at HubSpot, did extensive research on the value of backlinks, anchor text and a couple of other on-page elements across over 1 million pages.

Here is a summary of his most important findings:

On average 23% of all links on the first search results page in Google point to the number #1 result.

The number #1 result on Google gets on average over 186 external backlinks coming from unique domains than the number #5 position.

The number #1 result has on average 5.42% external backlinks with matching anchor text.

So now that you know the importance of quality backlinks, let’s have a look at ways you can build them for free to increase your traffic.

#1 Method: Create an awesome blog post and offer it to other blogs

This involves doing some research into the types of blog posts being written in your niche.

You want to look for posts that could use a link to your awesome blog post. Perhaps it’s a blog post that mentions affiliate marketing but does not explain what it is.

You can reach out to the blog owner and suggest a link to your comprehensive guide which explains what affiliate marketing is.

I have received a few requests, and where I feel that my readers will stand to gain from the information provided in the link I will agree to the backlink.

Some have also proactively offered me a quality backlink in return where relevant. That is always a nice touch.

The key is to be professional, make sure you have high quality content to share and clearly articulate how the blog owner will benefit by including a link to your website.

#2 Method: Create top-quality content to attract backlinks

This is a method that people like Neil Patel follow. They create crazy awesome and all-encompassing guides on a particular subject.

These posts can be anything from 5,000 to 10,000 words long and people naturally link to this content because it is seen as the authority in the niche.

If you have invested time and effort into creating top quality content, make sure you share it on all your social media channels. This way it will get in front of more people and increase the likelihood that someone will link to it.

#3: Do guest postings

Doing guest posting is by far the easiest and most efficient way to get backlinks. What you can do is look for some top quality websites in your niche and create awesome content for the website.

And in return you get backlinks.

Make sure you take the time to understand the audience of the blog you are wanting to write for and create high quality content that reflects positively on your brand and blog.

Guest Posting: How To Get Backlinks For Your Website That Will Boost Your Traffic

How To Get Backlinks For Your Website?

How to get backlinks for your website cover photo

Backlinking is a huge part of SEO, Search Engine Optimization.

If you’re trying to learn SEO and are wondering how to get more backlinks to your website, this post will teach you the basics of guest posting for link-building and SEO purposes.

What are Backlinks?

A backlink is a link to your website from someone else’s blog or website. Google uses these links as kind of an signal of approval for your website.

The number of backlinks you have is an important way that Google determines the quality of your content. If lots of other people link to it, it tells Google that your content is good.

But, you don’t want just any old backlinks. Google can certainly tell quality backlinks from trash.

That’s where guest posting can be hugely beneficial to you.

So before jumping into how to get backlinks for your website, let’s take a moment to talk about guest posting.

You may already be aware of this but guest posting is an awesome opportunity to share valuable information you have with a wider community.

What is Guest Posting?

Guest posting is submitting a post to another blog or website that isn’t your own. You provide that site owner with content, saving them time and effort if it’s good quality content. In return, they give you a link back to your own website as the author of the post.

That link back to your post is the quality backlink you are after.

And as we all know, it’s more blessed to give than to receive.

But hey, it’s not a one way street.

Is Guest Blogging Worth It?

There’s lots of talk about guest posting being dead.

And guest posting can appear counter-intuitive at first glance. I mean why would you spend hours on content creation for someone else.

Well its because there are some pretty perks for you when you choose to guest post:

  • Increased exposure for your content and brand
  • Great networking opportunity
  • Increase exposure and traffic to your website.
  • And of course, the good old backlink to your website.

How to find the right guest posting opportunities

If you’re brand new to blogging, then you should focus on just getting a guest posting opportunity which will help you to start building your backlink profile and find your audience.

Once your domain authority starts to climb, you want to be a little more discerning about guest posting so as to not waste your time.

Here is a checklist for a successful guest post:

  • Look for a website with a higher domain authority than your own
  • Or alternatively a website with a high social media following or readership than your own
  • Make sure you perform proper keyword research and optimize your post for SEO. Don’t rely on the site owner to do this for you as the post doing well helps you probably even more than them
  • Agree that the site owner and yourself will share your post on theirs and your social media channels to gain maximum exposure of your post.

Top Tips for Guest Posting

Top Tip #1: Trending Topics

To decide on what topic to guest post about you will want to find out what the trending topics for your chosen niche are. The easiest way is to jump on Google Trends:

https://www.google.com/trends/

You will also want to jump on various  social media platforms to see what current topics and issues are getting the most comments. The topics generating the most buzz are likely to be hot guest posting topics.

Top Tip #2: Don’t repeat articles

Yes, guest posting is a lot of work to create content that isn’t going on your site. But you are getting a valuable backlink in the process.

So make sure you do your homework. Check out the blog you want to guest post on.

Perhaps comment on a few articles, get a feel of what the readers are looking for and make sure you don’t offer to guest post article on a topic that the website owner has already covered! Seems simple but its a sure fire way to get rejected.

And on that note…

Top Tip #3: Prepare for Disappointment – Bounce Back!

How to get backlinks for your website bounce back

Even with the best guest posting pitch, you are going to face rejection!

It will happen.

The first time it happened to me, the rejection stung.

It hurts, rejection always hurts but its okay!

The most important thing is to pick yourself up and move on.

If getting guest posting opportunities were that easy , EVERYONE would be doing it! And everyone would have awesome backlink profiles and be able to boost their traffic!

How to Increase Traffic to My Website For Free
Newbie's Toolbox

How to Increase Traffic to My Website For Free

how to increase traffic to my website for free

Increasing traffic to your website for free all begins with the words typed into the Google search box.

Keyword research is one of the most important and high returning activities to ensure an increasing stream of visitors to your website.

Ranking for the right keywords can make or break your website. Nailing keyword research will allow you to learn which terms and phrases to target and what your customers are searching for.

It is not only about just getting traffic to your website but about getting the right kind of traffic.

With keyword research you can produce content that your audience are actively seeking. There has never been such a low barrier to entry in understanding what your customers want in any niche like there is today.

Let me show you how to increase traffic to your website for free through nailing keyword research.

All you have to do is take these keywords, and apply them to your marketing campaigns using the keyword success formula:

Relevant Keyword => Relevant Content = SUCCESS ($$$$)

Why are keywords important?

Because keywords are your path to rankings in Google.

Keywords are also the actual search terms that people enter into search engines like Google. So knowing what they are helps you understand what your potential customers need and are looking for.

The knowledge of these actual search terms can help inform the strategy of how to grow your traffic and online business.

The key to increase traffic to your website for free

There are millions and millions of keywords out there, but there is one mistake that prevents most marketers from being successful – they go after the most competitive, high traffic keywords.

This is a HUGE mistake as these keywords are extremely difficult to rank under and you end up getting only trickles of traffic. And if you have a new site you won’t get any traffic at all!

The key to being successful is to go after the low hanging fruit i.e. keywords with very little competition. If you understand how to find these types of keywords, you can get endless amounts of 1st page Google rankings within any niche. That means endless amounts of FREE traffic.

how to increase traffic to my website for free

So a low hanging fruit keyword is in essence a low competition keyword. Moving along with our fruit tree analogy, the fruit at the bottom of the tree is a bit small (it gets less traffic) but there are many more of them and there isn’t as much competition.

This is in stark contrast to the fruit at the top of free which most people are naturally competing for. These keywords have very high traffic but it takes time and much more effort to get them.

The idea behind this strategy is get rankings on search engines, for free!

This strategy is particularly important if you are starting a brand new website as it will be even harder for you to rank for more competitive terms.

So when starting out, this is your go to strategy – to target low competition keywords. But this strategy isn’t only for those with a brand new website, it can be used over and over again to gain an endless amount of traffic.

In this post, I want to walk you through this low hanging fruit strategy and help you come up with a list of keywords you should be targeting.

I want to show you that keyword research isn’t hard and can actually be fun. And that it is entirely within your grasp to increase traffic to your website for free and grow your business.

Step 1: Make a list of important topics relevant to your business.

how to increase traffic to my website for free

To start this process, think about the topics you want to rank for in terms of topic buckets.

Get out a piece of paper and try to come up with about 5-10 topic buckets. We will use these topic buckets to help direct our keyword research later in the process.

If you’re a blogger, what are the main topics you blog about most frequently? Perhaps you already have categories listed in your blog.

For example for an internet marketing blog you might have topics like, “SEO,” “Email Marketing” for example.

Make sense?

Step 2: Use a keyword research tool to identify high traffic, low competition keywords

Next, use a keyword tool to uncover the three most important metrics when looking for a “low hanging fruit” keyword

1. Monthly Searches – This is the traffic number you want to focus on. If you are going for natural rankings, then ANY traffic is a good amount of traffic. The more keywords you rank for, the more your traffic will grow.

2. QSR (Quoted Search Results) – This is the ULTIMATE competition metric and ONLY the Jaaxy keyword tool provides this key metric. This metric tells you the exact number of competing pages on Google, Yahoo and Bing there are under that EXACT search term. The higher the QSR, the more competition. If you are just starting out, aim for under 100. If you have a more established site, then you can aim for a QSR under 300 to get a good change of getting ranked. There are millions of these keywords out there and this metric makes it plain which keywords to focus on.

3. SEO Power – This determines whether or not a keyword is a good candidate for getting SEO rankings. If you can get rankings, you get more traffic, more click and can earn money online! This metric takes into account the traffic, the nature of the keyword, competition, and the keyword quality. The higher the SEO power the easiest it is to rank for this keyword.

These are the three most important metrics that will allow you to sift out the low hanging fruit keywords to target.

How does the keyword tool help you identify low hanging fruit?

With a Keyword research tool, all you have to do is key in the search term. Let’s say you have a weight loss blog and are looking for keywords relating to “exercises for abs”.

Simple hit “find keywords” these are the results that you get:

how to increase traffic to my website for free

So the first term “exercises for abs” has lots of monthly searches but the competition is over 100. So let’s move onto another keyword that is easier to rank for.

Let’s take “the best exercise for abs” for example. It gets even more searches but the competition (QSR) is less than 100.  92 for SEO power is also pretty good.

So there you go you have uncovered a low hanging fruit keyword right away!

Plus the keyword tool will give you lots of suggestions of related keywords.

The list below all look like high traffic and low competition keywords (i.e. low hanging fruit keywords) that you can target.

Are you starting to see how keyword research can be fun and even addictive?

It’s like uncovering pearls in the midst of the large sea of keywords. When you’ve found one, you just want to find another!

Step 3: Try the keyword research tool for yourself.

Go ahead and type in a search term >>>

What is shiny object syndrome and why it causes the downfall of many internet marketers

Why humans and cats are more similar than you might think

how to avoid shiny object syndrome Cats love laser pointers. Have you seen the facbeook videos of kittens chasing a little moving dot of light round the room? It’s so funny to watch the kitten chasing its tail and stumbling around trying to chase the shiny spot on the ground.

But just like the kitten, we too can be easily distracted by shiny objects that scream for our attention. Like the kitten we can be so focused on the shiny object that we end up chasing our tail and losing focus of the big picture.

Did you know that this is one the top reasons why newbies to internet marketing fail?

Its such an easy trap to fall into.

I too fell victim to this trap as a newbie.

Shiny object syndome causes newbies to run in circles chasing the wind, wasting precious time and hard-earned money.

Sadly, many of these newbies wid up giving up have given up in frustration, exhausted but with little results to show. This post is to warn you of this dangerous trap so you can avoid it and find success where many have not.

What is the Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS)?

how to avoid shiny object syndrome Like the kitten, it is an attraction to objects that exhibit a glassy, or otherwise shiny appearance.

For us, it isn’t the end of a lazer pointer but it is the attractive offers that flash across our screens on social media or in our inboxes. These objects appear so shiny and pretty. Afterall, they promise to have the secret to overnight success with little work – who doesn’t want lots of money with no work?

In some cases SOS can lead to death

how to avoid shiny object syndrome More often than not, these shiny objects are “fake bait” which leads people into scams. Falling into a scam is just the worst feeling in the world.

It not only zaps up your hard earned money but it really messes with your mind. You feel angry/stupid/sorry for yourself you fell for the scam, doubtful about whether or not you can even find success online and not to mention the family members that tell you “I told you so, the online thing is just a scam anyway”.

I have been in that dark place and almost gave up trying to pursue building an online business. I had nearly lost all hope after being duked by some silly scam. I’m so thankful I never gave up.

But it pains me to think how many have never quite recovered, the ones that let their dream die and end up the cynics with regrets telling other people the “online thing just doesn’t work”.

In other cases, SOS can cause you to run but never get anywhere

This syndrome can be a huge distraction. Like the kitten you can feel productive and busy running around chasing the shiny object but in reality you have just been runnig around the same room, not achieving a whole lot.

It’s a dangerous place to be where you are buying every new magic bullet solutions that promises to solve your problems.

Once you get into the cycle of buying new shiny objects, the addiction is real and it can be a hard habit to break.

Don’t make this common mistake

how to avoid shiny object syndrome I’ve seen too many newbies pursue making money online because they are sick of the 9-5 grind and just want more time, money and control over their lives.

They start strong and with so much promise. With an eagerness to learn all it takes to build a successful online business, they start on the journey but then quickly get sidetracked by the many shiny objects alone the path.

If I had a penny for everytime someone asked me, “Hey Shan, what do you think about this product?” My answer is, “I don’t know! Just stick to the original plan, the proven plan that has it all – the tools, the support, the training, the networking for you to succeed online”. I know its tempting to buy new products in search for sucesss but buying all these shiny new objects without putting them into action will lead you nowhere fast. I mean I totally get it.

There is always a tendency to be distracted by new information and popups in our crazy connected world. I’m guilty of clicking into a popup when I’m right in the middle of crafting a blog post. I’m sure we have all be led away by a notification or new email when working on something. We are humans and we do have a desire but new things.

But the stakes are high so we need to fight the urge.

There are two kinds of entrepreneurs in this world – those who are successful and those who fail.  Staying on a particular course until mastery and FOCUS is what seperates the successful from those who are not.

The choice is yours – success or failure is in your hands

how to avoid shiny object syndrome I want you to make a decision today. Which one are you going to be? Have you decided you won’t fall into the deadly trap of SOS.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

If it’s the former, then we have to fight the tide. Stop chasing the next product in the name of chasing success. Take action with what you already know today. If distractions are a problem for you, then do what you need to:

  • Turn off your phone,
  • Put your phone in another room (and on silent),
  • Install a free productivity program to block laptop distractions.

What is the best time to start a business – it has never been easier, so what’s your excuse?

The Bad News and the Good News

Newspaper

With more than 10 million workers in the UK at risk of being replaced by robots by Artificial Intelligence (AI), it has never been more pressing for you and I to find a way to increase our income.

With our 9-5 jobs at risk, we can’t just rely on our monthly pay check as our security blanket anymore. We have to prepare for the future that lies ahead.

But its not all doom and gloom. With the advances in technology, it has also never been easier to start a business today. The internet has created a viable opportunity for ordinary people like you and me, with no technical or marketing experience to grow a successful business to supplement and backup our income with the lowest barriers to entry that has ever existed.

Want to start a successful online business? Check Out My #1 Recommendation

So what is the best time to start a business?

Start a business

Well, the best time to start a business is NOW!

But why don’t we see more people starting a business and preparing for the future?

Well, most people want to start now but they tell themselves, “I just don’t have time to start a business.”

It’s true that our lives are busy. But guess what?

Life is busy and it’s not likely to change anytime soon!

When you are at college, you’ll say I need to study, I’m too busy. Then you start a demanding job and get even busier. Then down the track you get married and have kids. Spoiler alert…you will be even busier yet!

There will always been demands for our time. We all have various priorities and tasks pulling at us every day – our studies, our jobs, our families, our social lives….

Ask yourself, why do you want to start a business?

Know your Why

Maybe you’ve had one of those moments…

You are sitting at your 9-5 job and at around 3pm, the afternoon energy slump, you sit back with a sigh and think to yourself…

I just can’t do this anymore…I can’t do it.

Or maybe your company has implemented some new technology and some of your colleagues have found letters on their desk…telling them their roles have been disestablished. Every day, a crippling feeling of fear fills your as you can’t help feeling your job is closer and closer to be replaced by the next machine upgrade.

You know you have to build another source of income.

No matter what you why is, many successful businesses are born out of these ‘whys’. And you are in the exact same position as almost anyone I’ve met that has built a successful business online. They had demanding jobs, kids and a busy life but they managed to find time to build a business. And you can find time too.

I remember when I first felt compelled to start a business, I told myself I just started my career, I’m too busy to think about anything else. In fact, it wasn’t until down the track when I had a baby AND a career that I found the time to start a business.

Was it because I suddenly had all this extra time on my hands? Trust me, with a baby that hardly slept, I didn’t. It was because I had a stronger and more compelling ‘why’ to why I wanted to start a business. With a new baby, I knew that I didn’t want to spend hours at my job away from her and missing out on her childhood. So with this renewed passion I managed to find time to finally get started.

Check out these two guys who started a business while one had a full-time job and the other hand a commanding agency business. They managed to find the time ‘working nights and weekends’.

Everyone gets the same 24 hours in a day

You have the same numbers of hours in a day as Beyonce

So how does Beyonce manage to go to so many basketball games with Jay-Z, take amazing holidays and run a fashion line, music and other businesses while having a family on top of that? Surely she must have more than 24 hours in a day! That reality is, we all have the exact same 24 hours in a day.

Some people like Beyonce can probably go with less sleep but if you are like me, you need a full 8 hours (especially with baby waking up during the nights). That still leaves a good 16 hours per day that you are in FULL control of. The only difference between the people who are ‘too busy’ and those who find the time despite the busyness, is how they use their 16 hours.

Personal Sacrifices

When I started out, I had to make some sacrifices in terms of time. I had to do things a bit differently. Instead of turning Netflicks on when my baby went to bed, I would work on my business. Instead of accept every social invite, I worked on my business. Instead of taking an hour lunch break, I found a quiet spot and ate while I worked on my business.

I must admit some days were tough – a deadline at work meant that I got home later, only to rush through dinner, bath time then my baby would decide she didn’t want to sleep and wanted to play with mom for hours. By the time my baby was in bed, I was ready for bed myself. On days like that I might do 15-20 minutes before calling in a night. But doing something was better than nothing.

On average, I would manage to dedicate 2-3 hours per day to working on my business. Yes, I might have had less to talk about with colleagues around the printer as I wasn’t clued up on the latest TV programs. But I knew I was building a source of supplementary and eventually full-time income that would give me the freedom to live the way I wanted to and escape the 9-5 grind.

You can do the same. I challenge you to take a look at your day, map it out and find ways to carve out time to get started on your business.

Here are some practical ways that I’ve used to ‘fit in’ starting a business into a busy life. Who knows, they might just work for you too

7 Practical Ways I Use To ‘Make More Time’

(1) Write down weekly business goals. Now this is not a full-blown planning exercise but a simple 5-minute outline of the week. I get out my notebook and jot down a maximum of 3 tasks I want to get done every day with my business. My plan for a particular day might be – plan next 5 blog posts, respond to comments and cover a chapter of self-learning for example. It’s easier to be productive when you don’t have to spend the first 15-20 minutes deciding what to do and actually ‘get work done’ right away.

(2) Have dedicated days for laundry and other chores. With little people in the house, my laundry pile seems to be never ending. The temptation for me is to quickly put on a load of laundry in the evenings. This ‘quick task” can quickly suck up 30 minutes if you included hanging the clothes out to dry and ‘quickly’ hand washing a few bits and pieces.

Do you have other chores that need to be done but seem to suck time out of your day? For me, Thursdays are now laundry day and maybe Saturday if it’s sunny. Try planning your meals for the week or precooking to make cut dinner prep time. It’s the little stresses that zap your energy and suck up your time.

(3) Get myself out of Facebook (and social media). Facebook in particular is a huge distraction for me. Just one click on the app can mean 30 minutes of watching ridiculous videos. To gain 30 minutes back a day, I took drastic action and decided to delete my Facebook app.

Trust me, you’ll be more productive if you remove social media distractions. And don’t worry, missing out on funny videos and your friend’s latest “look at my awesome life’ posts will actually be a nice break.

(4) Work on your business during lunch. If you still in a 9-5 job, take your lunch hour to develop idea, work on your website or do some research. This is how I used to carve out an extra 1 hour a day to invest into my business. Don’t underestimate how much you can get done in the hour. In fact, planning and researching during my lunch hour meant that I could focus on other more meaty tasks in the evening.

(5) Take a notebook wherever you go. Great entrepreneurs like Richard Branson and Bill Gates all go through many notebooks a year. So take a notebook with you to jot down ideas and thoughts that pop into your mind during the day. I used to keep digital notes on Onenote in my phone until I realized there was something magical about pen and paper. It just seems to get the creative juices flowing better. Try both out and see which one works better for you.

(6) Read on the go! I used to turn on the TV first thing in the morning. Not only was that starting my day off with negative reports which zapped my energy, it was also frankly just a waste of time. These days I prefer to listen to podcasts or audio book to keep informed and keep progressing my education. I listen to this as I get ready in the morning and as I drive to work.

When I’m running at the gym, I like the read e books and keep learning on my favorite online platform Wealthy Affiliate. I also use apps that summarize business books to get as much knowledge as I can about my business niche and running a business etc.

(7) Stop multi-tasking, it’s wasting precious time. Did you know that new research confirms that distractions reduce our productivity and rewire our brains resulting in a drop in IQ by 5 points! Eek! So if you are easily distracted like me, you can download this free productivity program to block distractions on your laptop so you can actually get work done.

I would love to hear your feedback on what you think is the best time to start a business.

I do hope this post has been helpful for helping you find practical ways to find extra hours in the day to start your business now instead of putting it off.

This is where I personally learnt to start a successful business, you can check out my full review here.

The Best Domain Name Registrars for 2017 and 2018

The best domain name registrars for 2017 and 2018

When that lightbulb moment strikes and you have a brilliant idea for a website, the first thing you need to do is get an awesome domain name to go with it.

After all, your domain name will be your brand, your own piece of virtual real estate.

Domains, Your Piece of Virtual Real Estate

While you can get domains for free, it is important to get your OWN piece of “virtual real estate” or domain.

Having your own .com, .org, or .net domain comes with some real incentives such as:

  • It’s an Asset that You Own. When you purchase a domain, you own it. Its 100% yours and you are also in full control of every aspect of your domain.
  • Your Domains will Increase in Value. As you build out your website and your domain, it will increase in value just like improvement and extensions to any real estate asset.
  • They Rank Better. Having your own domain leads to better rankings in Google, Bing & Yahoo which own 99% of all searches online. This is a big deal as better rankings lead to more traffic and visitors. More visitors means more sales and more revenue (yay!).

Now that you know the importance of having your own domain, there is ONE problem.

Which domain registrar should you choose?

If that’s you and you’re wondering what the best domain registrar on the market is, then you’ve come to the right place.

This list is not only based off my personal experience with these registrars, but is also supported by hours of online research.

The Best Domain Registrars for 2017/ 2018?

I have shortlisted the top 5 best domain registrar services online based on various criteria like reputation, security, fetures, ease of use, price etc.

All the domain registrars have the following key features which are a must:

  • 24/7 technical support
  • Live chat
  • Security
  • Clear pricing and renewal rates.

I hope this helps you find the best domain registrar that meets you needs!

  1. Namecheap – The best domain registrar on the market

The best domain registrars 2017 and 2018 Namecheap

Official Website: NameCheap.com

Founded in 2000, NameCheap is one of the most well-known and recommended domain name registrars. NameCheap has also been selected as a best domain name registrar at Lifehacker poll from 2010 to 2015, that is no easy feat with the fierce competition in the market.

It has also won many reader’s choice awards.

NameCheap offers a user-friendly platform for buying domain names as well as hosting and other tools for building your website. NameCheap is also known for its reasonable up-front pricing and great technical support.

This is the reason why NameCheap is so popular and has been nominated for so many awards from site reviews to users’ votes. This is also why NameCheap is my domain registrar of choice, where I register my first websites.

My favorite thing about NameCheap was the up-front pricing. I had previously been put off by domain registrars that lure you in with cheap prices for your first year, then slap you with overpriced SSL certificate and domain privacy options (cough! Godaddy cough!).

With NameCheap, you can get SSL certificates to protect your sites at very reasonable prices. They also offer an outstanding 24/7 live chat support which I found invaluable especially when first starting out. When I hit an issue, I was always able to reach out to an online support person in minutes.

best domain registrars 2017 and 2018 namecheap

Aside from domain registration, NameCheap also offers Shared Hosting, Reseller hosting, VPS hosting, Dedicated servers and Email hosting at very reasonable prices.

I still highly recommend NameCheap as your domain registrar of choice!

2.  Wealthy Affiliate – the one stop shop for online entrepreneurs

Official Website: https://www.wealthyaffiliate.c…

SiteDomain Best Domain registrars 2017 2018

As an online entrepreneur, you need a domain name, hosting, personal email, content management system to run your business.

Wealthy Affiliate has made things very simple and I want to show you today why this is fast becoming my favorite domain registrar of choice.

Firstly, Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteDomain makes purchasing domain names simple. I don’t have to wait 48 hours to see my website live online. Once I purchase a domain name, it is immediately available for me to start building.

I mean who has time to wait around, we want to start building your website asap!

SiteDomain also provides WHOIS Privacy Protection so no one will see your personal details like name and address.

SiteDomain also offers free SSL certificates. That gives you the little green padlock you see on sites like Paypal.

Best domain registrars 2017 2018

This shows people that your site is secure and gives you better rankings on search engines.

Again, other domain registrars provide this at an additional cost. SiteDomains includes this as part of their complete package,

And just like NameCheap, SiteDomain does not have any hidden pricing and offers Next Year Guarantee Pricing. There is no $0.99 domain name for the first year, then a surprise $20 renewal fee the next year. You have certainty over what your domain is going to cost you year on year.

And just like NameCheap, SiteDomain has brilliant 24/7 site support and live chat so you will never feel alone when faced with a problem.

So overall, I rate NameCheap slightly higher because it is cheaper and is great if you need only a domain name and hosting, nothing else.

However, if you are looking for a one-stop shop for all your online business needs the Wealthy Affiliate has all the features you need including:

  • Over 300 hours of Expert Education
  • Online Entrepreneur Certification (50 lessons)
  • Weekly LIVE interactive classes
  • Industry leading web hosting
  • Integrated keyword research tool
  • Content writing platform with grammar and spelling checker, plagiarism checker and over 1 million optimized photos
  • Network of 1.2 MILLION Members
  • Access to personal mentoring and support from industry experts

If you are interested, you can read my full review here.

3. Bluehost – Offers free domain registration with hosting

best domain registrars for 2017 and 2018 bluehost

Official Website: www.bluehost.com/

BlueHost is not only a domain registrar but like Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteDomain it also provides hosting.

As of 2017, BlueHost like SiteDomain offers free SSL certificate on all WordPress downloads, giving you that added security.

If you are looking for both a host and domain registrar and don’t need the additional features that Wealthy Affiliate provides, then BlueHost is a great choice.

It is a definite cost saving to be able to get your domain for free with a BlueHost hosting package. I understand that when you are first starting out budgets are a bit tight, so every penny counts!

BlueHost offers several hosting services such as hosting, Cloud Hosting, share and dedicated hosting, VPS all with a free domain name for a year.

But I note when your domain name renews it is more pricey than Namecheap AND Wealthy Affiliate’s Sitedomain. But you can always decide to move it at the time.

BlueHost is used by many of the big names in the online entrepreneur industry like Pat Flynn and Ramsay Taplin. That says a lot.

Best domain registrar 2017 and 2018 bluehost endorsement

If BlueHost provides quality hosting for these big websites that get lots of lots of traffic. You can be sure it will handle your website with ease.

BlueHost also provides great 24/7 support which is absolutely essential in my books.

I would recommend BlueHost for those who are looking for affordable WordPress hosting.

4.     iPage – Great for small sized websites

Official Website: www.ipage.com/

best domain registrar 2017 and 2018 ipage

Just like BlueHost, iPage offers website hosting with a free domain name for a year. After this, they do offer renewals for as low as $8.99 per month.

iPage does offer one of the cheapest web hosting you can find on the market today starting at only $1.99 per month.

If you are just starting out and are on a bit of a shoestring budget, this is perfect for you.

iPage also offers quite a few freebies such as  SiteLock security, Free toll-free number, Site Analytics and more.

The iPage domain name registration platform is also very user friendly and makes buying a domain nice and simple.

But the only downside with iPage is that it will not grow with your website ambitions. To keep its costs low, iPage does not have the capability to host robust sites on its platform. There is also limited storage which may slow your website down.

When you are starting out on a budget, iPage is a good option. But if you are looking for a long term domain registrar and host that can grow with your business and ambitions then my top 3 would be a much better choice.

5.     HostGator – Affordable and Reliable

Official Website: www.hostgator.com/

best domain registrar 2017 and 2018 hostgator

Hostgator is one of the largest domain registrars and web hosting companies on the market. It currently hosting over 9 million sites (Bluehost for example hosts about 2 million sites)!

Unlike iPage, it can grow with you and host bandwidth-heavy sites.

While Hostgator started off as a web hosting company, it has now added domain registration to their list of services. Their domain registration start at $12.59 per year and they will help you setup everything and connect your domain names and host with no fuss.

However, unlike Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteDomain which offers free setup, domain registration and web hosting all in one platform, Hostgator does not offer SSL certificate, Whois Privacy Protection and unlimited email addresses in the price.

Like all good domain registrars, Hostgator offer great 24/7 technical support. There is a toll-free number, live chat and ticketing support that allows you to get help anytime you need it.

As a whole HostGator is a solid and affordable choice for both hosting and domain name registrar if you are looking to have them in one place.

While it is not a comprehensive one-stop shop with Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteDomain, it does offer a more competitive price than BlueHost and SiteDomain.

A walkthrough how to actually registrar a domain name

So hopefully you have now decided on your domain registrar of choice and a ready to purchase your first piece of virtual real estate. Exciting!

I’m going to walk you through the process of buying and setting up your domain name below. While I’ll be using SiteDomain as an example, this process is largely similar for domain registrars which offer both domain registration and hosting on one platform.

If you prefer the walkthrough by video, here you go:

best domain registrar in 2017 and 2018 how to register a domain video

Step 1: Coming up with a domain name

Did you know that there are over 334.6 million registered domain names out there as at 2016?

This is why it is important to brainstorm for as many domain names as possible, just in case your first choice is already taken.

To come up with a list of domain ideas, I use namemesh.com. It is a completely free tool it is brilliant to help you come up with “brand worthy” domain ideas.

Here are a few top up for choosing a domain name that you should consider.

Tip #1: Don’t worry about keywords in your domain

You might have heard that websites with keywords get better traffic. While this used to be true, Google has since changed its algorithm and now keywords in your domain get DO NOT matter. As you build out your website, your content and posts that target keyword will naturally get you rankings.

Tip #2: Aim to get a “.com” domain.

These have the tendency to rank the best, but as 2nd best choice you want either a .net or .org domain.

I would personally avoid the TLD type domains (.cool, .reviews, .travel, .money, .co). People don’t trust these as much and they definitely do not achieve the same kind of rankings that .com and .org domains do with the same efficiency.

Tip #3: Avoid “dashes” in your domain.

MyBasketballSkills.com (GREAT)

My-Basketball-Skills.com (NOT AS GOOD)

While domain with dashes can definitely still rank, but they are not as good. They are also harder for people to type and search for.

Tip #4: Choose a “brandable” domain.

Be brandable and make your domain name easy to remember. You also want a name that resonates with you. Because your domain is going to be the long term brand for your website you should be something you like.

Step 2: If you are building a brand new website

To start a brand new website, you will want to go to the Sitebuilder platform within Siterubix => SiteBuilder menu:

Then you want to select “Register a domain” and this will direct you to SiteDomains.

Step 3: Check if your preferred domain name is available

To do this, you can do a search using SiteDomains.

Alternatively, you can find the SiteDomains platform within the SiteRubix => SiteDomains menu:

From there, do a search for your preferred domain name. In this example below, we are doing a search for “BasketballSkillsAndskills.com”.

In this case, our first choice is not available. So we will need to move onto the next preferred domain name on our list. You now see why brainstorming a few options in step 1 is important.

Step 3: Purchase Domain name

When you get a domain name that is available, click “Add to Cart”. Then you just go through the checkout process and purchase the domain.

If you have purchased something online before, you will be very familiar with this check-out process.

And there you have it, you very own online “real estate” investment!

Step 4: Move your existing website to your new domain

If you previously had a free website Siterubix platform then you will want to move this over to your newly purchased domain name.

Here is a video of the transfer process, it is literally just a click of a few buttons.

Step 5: Set up Domain with hosting

If you are using other platforms, this is a crucial step where you link your hosting (where the stuff on your website) with your domain (your piece of onluine real estate).

If you are building a new website with SiteDomain, then you don’t have to do this. It is automatically done for you. All you have to do is go into SiteManager and your website will be ready for you to build and work on instantly.

But if you domain registrar and host are different then you need to jump through a few more hoops.

Let’s say you decided to buy your domain name on Namecheap but want the hosting and all the features of Wealthy Affiliate. No problem.

Here is a link to a great step by step tutorial by Steve.

Final words

I hope this post has helped you decide on your preferred domain registrar.

My personal recommendation is either NameCheap or Wealthy Affiliate’s SiteDomain. Both are great domain registrars with great 24/7 support and absolutely no upsells.

Your choice between the two will depend on whether you need the full features that the one-stop shop Wealthy Affiliate offers.

Its time to have your say

But that is just my personal recommendation.

What is your choice going to be?

Let me know if the comments below. And if you’ve had any experiences with the services above, please share your experience with me on the comments below. And of course if you have any questions domain registrars, let me know and I will try my best to answer!

How to do keyword research in Google and create a successful online marketing campaign

While Google constantly keeps us on our toes with their algorithm updates, one thing has stayed consistent for bloggers and internet marketers: looking to optimize their websites for search i.e. keyword research.

The need to do keyword research still remains.

So what is keyword research?

How to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

Keyword research is when people use keywords to find and research actual search terms that people enter into search engines like Google. The knowledge of these actual search terms can help inform the strategy of how to grow your traffic and online business.

In this post, I’m going to walk you through the keyword research process to help you come up with a list of terms you should be targeting.

I want to show you that keyword research isn’t hard and can actually be fun. With this process, you will also be able to generate tons of keyword research ideas that will allow you to grow your business.

Almost all traffic starts with a keyword whether you are article marketing, going the SEO route, or using Pay Per Click networks.

That is why understanding how to conduct keyword research and how to recognize keywords that are worth your focus is absolutely essential.

How to Research Keywords for Your SEO Strategy

Step 1: Make a list of important topics relevant to your business.

How to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

To start this process, think about the topics you want to rank for in terms of generic topics buckets.

Get out a piece of paper and try to come up with about 5-10 topic buckets. We will use these topic buckets to help direct our keyword research later in the process.

If you’re a blogger, what are the main topics you blog about most frequently? Perhaps you already have categories listed in your blog.

For example for a weight loss blog you might have topics like, “Exercises to lose weight,” “Healthy Eating”, “Weight Loss Supplements”, “Weight Loss tools” for example.

Make sense?

Step 2: Fill in those topic buckets using the Alphabet Soup Method

Now that you have a few topic buckets to focus on, it’s time to identify keywords to place into those buckets. These are keyword phrases you think are important to rank for in the SERPs (search engine results pages) because your potential audience is probably conducting searches for those specific terms.

There are a few different methods, but these are the two that I use.

I use a keyword research tool called Jaaxy on a daily basis. If you are interested in knowing more about this tool, click here to see how it works and how that will help you build your business.

But if you are a newbie you might want to start with this simpler method – just ask Google.

How to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

Do you know how Google finishes your sentences for you?

Google uses data coming from real web searches to try to guess what you are trying to search for.

This can give you some valuable insight into what people are searching for (and for FREE which is a bonus).

The Alphabet Soup Method Explained

How to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

Let’s say we are looking for keywords for our first topic bucket, “Exercises”.

So I start with the phrase “what kind of exercise is”, then work through the alphabet.

Starting with “A”, here are the ideas that Google has suggested:

how to do keyword research efficiently and nail it 1

Moving through to “B”, here are the ideas that Google has suggested:

how to do keyword research efficiently and nail it 2

Then moving to “C”, here are the ideas that Google has suggested:

how to do keyword research efficiently and nail it 3

I can then try more variations to my Google search to see what else turns up. Like “exercises for”… and then move through the alphabet for example.

Are you getting the hang of this?

The ideas you can come up with from Google are endless.

Most keyword tools have the capabilities to store keyword lists within them but since we are using Google, just keep your keywords in a Google doc or Word doc.  Just make sure they are somewhere safe and readily available so all your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

Here is a video of a walkthrough the Alphabet Soup Technique:

how to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

Step 3: Use a keyword research tool to identify high traffic, low competition keywords

When you are ready to get a bit more advanced, you can use a keyword tool to get the more detailed search data for your keyword list.

While using the Alphabet Soup Technique will give you some valuable insight into what people are searching for, it won’t give you specific metrics such as:

These are the three most important metrics that will allow you to sift out the “winners’ from your keyword list to target.

Carrying on from the example above, “exercises for abs” and “exercises for archillies tendonitis” were the first two suggestion provided by Google.

That means these are both relevant search terms that people are typing into Google.

But if you wanted to know which search term to focus on.

How would you choose between the two?

Well, let’s use a Keyword research tool to get the insider knowledge on these two search terms.

Here are the Jaaxy keyword research tool results:

how to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

how to do keyword research efficiently and nail it

So the first term “exercises for abs” definitely has much more monthly searches, 2,841 to be exact compared with less than 10 for “exercises for Achilles tendonitis”.

The competition is also under 100, which means it’s easy to rank for. 90 for SEO power is pretty good.

So I would choose to focus on the first search term given there is high traffic and low competition for this keyword. You have uncovered a winner!

Plus the keyword tool will give you lots of suggestions of related keywords. The list below all look like high traffic and low competition keywords that you can target.

Are you starting to see how keyword research can be fun and even addictive?

It’s like uncovering pearls in the midst of the large sea of keywords. When you’ve found one, you just want to find another!

Try the keyword research tool for yourself.

Go ahead and type in a search term >>>

Step 4: Spy and see what how your competitors are ranking for these keywords.

If you have a competitor that always seems to be hot on your heels, then you might want to have a ‘spy’ at how they are ranking for a certain keyword.

The Jaaxy keyword research tool allows you to do just that.

Simply type in the keyword and the url of your competitor. I have used a health blog as an example here.

KW research jaaxy exercises for abs compeititor

This will tell you what position your competitor is ranking for on Google, Bing and Yahoo.

It is best if your competitor is not yet ranking for the keyword so you can beat them to it. But if they are ranking high, no worries. Have a read of their article and take note of:

  • The length,
  • The videos
  • The level of engagement (e.g. comments)

This will give you an idea how to write an article that is better and than theirs! So you can overtake them in rankings!

And … You’re done!

Congratulations! You now understand the process of how to do keyword research and can really nail it.

This means you will have accomplished one of the most critical steps to creating a successful online marketing campaign.

Almost every transaction online typically starts with a search, and being able to target search terms allows you to attract traffic, and lots of it.

There are millions and millions of keywords out there and the process provided in this post will help you generate thousands of thousands of keyword ideas.

All you have to do is take these keywords, and apply them to your marketing campaigns using the keyword success formula:

Relevant Keyword => Relevant Content = SUCCESS ($$$$)

Alright, now get out there and get keyword researching!

If you have any questions or your own tips and tricks to keyword research please share them in the comments below!

How to find low competition keywords with high traffic– the secret to unleashing free traffic to your website

keyword research for blogging

If you are a blogger or website owner, it is crucial to your search engine success to understand how to find the right keywords for a website. This all starts with understand how to research keywords, in particular low competition keywords with high traffic.

Don’t worry keyword research is simple!

As a newbie, I found the term ‘keyword research’ very intimidating. It sounds complicated and very technical.

Let me assure you it isn’t.

In fact, there are just THREE things that you need to look for when doing keyword research for your website. Yup, just three.

Ready for it?

The 3 Keys for Effective Keyword Research

The First Key – Low Competition (<100 QSR)

This is always the first key I focus on when doing keyword research.

I want to know if it’s going to be easy to rank for a keyword. So if a particular keyword has too much competition, then I don’t even bother because I know my efforts aren’t going to result in any traffic.

This is crucial when you are first starting out and your website is still new. You want to quickly gain search engine traction by targeting low competition keywords.

Trying to compete with established long-standing websites for a particular keyword is like a feather-weight trying to take on a heavyweight. You are going to knocked out and have no traffic to show for your hard work. Not a good plan.

The specific metric I look for to determine the level of competition for a keyword is QSR (Quote Search Results).

QSR represents the exact number of web results that are present on Google for any exact search phrase.

So, why can’t you just Google the keyword yourself? Well, here’s why.

Let’s say you are searching for the term “what is the best way to do keyword research” on Google. The total number of web results displayed is 20,200,000. However, this is NOT an accurate count of the total number of web pages on Google for this query.

Google search result

If you dig down into the last result shown, you will only see 397 web pages. This is the true number of web pages present for the query “what is the best way to do keyword research”.

keywordresearch google last result

Here a video from the Google man himself Matt Cutts explaining the reason for change in the number of search results when we dig deeper in Google.

How to Find QSR Easily?

So far there is only one tool that I am aware of that serves up this metric in an efficient way, and that is Jaaxy. And yup, that is the trusty keyword research tool that I use daily for my keyword research.

You can use Jaaxy to find accurate numbers of QSR as well as the estimated amount of traffic that you will get from the targeted keywords.

So what QSR am I looking for?

If you are a newbie, I would suggest going for a QSR of under 100. If you are a bit more established with Google, then you can aim for a QSR of under 300.

At the end of the day, the closer to ZERO the better. The lower the QSR, the lower the competition.

Ok, so how do I find QSR?

This is how you do it:

keywordresearch QSR jaaxy result

1. Type in the keyword you can want to research into the search bar

2. Hit ‘find keyword’

3. Look up the QSR and check for those under 100.

It’s that simple.

The Second Key – Traffic (> 100 Average searches per month)

I don’t go for the ‘hottest’ keywords. Sure, hot keywords can get thousands of searches per day. But what is the point of targeting those keywords when I won’t get ranked. No ranking = 0 traffic anyway, no matter how impressive the keyword’s traffic is.

So I choose decent traffic but low competition any day. Sure, 19 visits per day doesn’t sound all that exciting (per our example above). But because of the low competition – ‘3’ other competition pages for ‘What’s the best way to do keyword research’, it’s easy to get ranked.

That will be 19 more visitors to my site than if I choose to target a ‘hot’ keyword.

And you know what? These low volume keywords add up when you start ranking them. If you get 1st page rankings in the search engines with 100 these keywords that’s 1,900 daily visitors (a modest 19 x 100) to your website for free!

Now that’s not too shabby is it?

keywordresearch Average Traffic jaaxy result

And don’t worry there are low competition keywords with higher traffic numbers than 19 visitors a day. You just have to look for them. And trust me they are out there!

I must also warn you – keyword research can become addictive. Once you find a low competition and high traffic keyword, it will make you hungry for more.

The third key – the keyword phrase must make sense (to humans)

Take the title of this post as an example. My title makes sense and my target keywords fit natural and nicely into the title.

If I was aiming for a keyword which did not make any sense or wasn’t grammatically right, it would look awkward and just plain bad to try to put it in my title and in my content.

Take ‘how find keywords’ vs. ‘how to find keywords’ for example.

While the second keyword makes sense, the first one doesn’t.

If I tried to use the first one in my title, it would probably look awkward, like I didn’t speak good English.

So as a general rule of thumb, I make sure that the keyword I’m targeting makes sense.

At the end of the day, we must remember that we write content on our websites for humans and not for search engines. It is regular people like you and me that type searches into Google every day. We are likely to type in keywords and questions that make sense.

So keywords that make sense are likely to be more relevant to your audience and convert better – bonus!

So are you ready to try keyword research for yourself?

Now it is your turn!

Pick a topic or theme from your website and plug it into the search tool below.

Just follow the THREE Keys for Effective Keyword Research and you will be on your way to unlocking the secret to getting free traffic to your website and your future success going forward. I can assure you of that.

Can You Really Make Money Online Without A Website?

Making Money Without A Website – Is It The Easier Way?

When I was first exploring how to make money online, I immediately dismissed anything that required a website.

I just put it in the ‘too hard basket’ assuming that with zero coding knowledge, building a website was just out of my reach.

Like me, most people love the idea of being able to make money without a website. Building a website just sounds too impossible, like an unscalable mountain.

So naturally I searched for an “easier” way way to make money online. One that didn’t require me  to build a website. I thought surely I can earn enough online to escape the rat race without the complexity of building a website.

So off I went in search of the opportunity that was going to give me enough passive income to give up my day job.

Are you looking at how to make money online?

Preferably without having to build a website?

It’s definitely possible. But the results will be bit different to what you would expect.

Here are 6 Ways you can make money online without a website:

  1. Complete online surveys

This is what I started with – sounds nice and easy. And it is.

It’s free to sign up and there are so many survey companies to choose from.

Some are better than others but the bottom line is when I did the math, I was being paid well below the minimum wage.

That was definitely not moving me any closer towards my dream of passive income (i.e. making money while I was sleeping) so I knew I had to find something else. Something better.

Bottom line:

If you love searching the internet, watching videos and taking surveys for fun during your free time, then check out this survey site.

Their pay out conditions are the most favorable along the top survey sites. You can generate free prizes from a good range of merchants.

However, if you are hoping to replace a part-time income with this then DON’T waste your time. A minimum wage job pays about 10 times the hourly rate that online surveys will.

Think about that.

  1. Sell your hand-made goods online.

There is a huge market for people who love to buy crafts and hand-made objects online.

You can sell online on stores like Etsy or Artfire.

Bottom-line:

Unless you truly have a passion for creating crafts and hand-made products, the competiton out there is great. And it is diffcult to command a price that really recognises the hours and heart that goes into each product.

  1. Sell your skills.

There are a number of sites like Freelancer, Fiverr and Upwork that connect skilled individuals with people in need of those skills.

Whether you are a graphic designer, accountant or transcriber, you can find someone willing to pay you a reasonable amount for your work.

Bottom-line:

It is very competitive to score a gig as there are people in developing countries competitin with you the offer very low bids. Work was often very patchy and really depended on how many people were bidding for a job.

  1. Create YouTube Videos or eBooks

If you create a YouTube video, you can earn money from advertising based on how many views you receive. You can get about $1–$3 per 1000 views which isn’t much. However that can add up quickly of you have lots of videos posted and gain more viewers.

An added benefit here is that you can create videos about whatever you want, as long as you think others will want to watch it.

Similarly, you can also write eBooks and self publish. You can tell your eBook on Kindle or Amazon.

Bottom line:

There is an enormous amount of competition and unless you are create videos and write eBooks that will appeal to a wide audience or you have already established an online presence or social media following, it is difficult to gain traction with Youtube videos and selling eBooks.

  1. Work for Amazon’s Mechanical Turk.

This involves completing small tasks that Amazon’s automated computers are unable to do, such as describing the color of a shirt. Each task will only take you a few seconds, but also only pays you a few cents.

Bottom-line:

These tasks are very repetitive and at a few cents per task you really have to do quite a few to make anything meaningful.

  1. Be an Affiliate Marketer without a Website

There are many “gurus” that say you can make 6 figure incomes from affiliate marketing without the need for a website.

Is this a scam? Is it really possible?

Well yes it is. You can sell products on behalf of a merchant from a social media platform like Twitter or Facebook.

You can also Bing and Yahoo paid per click (PPC) ads campaigns directly to affiliate product landing pages without the need for your own website.

However what they often fail to explain is that if you have experience PPC advertising experience or already have a social media following, yes it is as simple as tweeting an affiliate link or launching a Bing ad campsign and BAM all these people purchase the product and thousands of dollars in commission start folling in.

If you are just starting out, you probably don’t have a large social media following.

My guess is that your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter may not be scrambling to click on your affiliate link and buy the product if you suddenly did a tweet or post.

Bottom line:

Starting with PPC advertising is like trying to run before you can walk. I’m afraid it will be like throwing money into a Bing fire (excuse the pun).

Starting as an affiliate marketer without a website will likely result in you losing instead of earning money.

Keystrokes per minute for data entry jobs explained

Keystrokes per minute? Do you mean words per minute?

Most of us are familiar with the term “words per minute” (wpm) which is the most common measure of a person’s typing speed.

Did you know that while wpm measures how fast your type with both hands which keystrokes per minute (kpm) measure how fast you type one-handed?

A ‘Keystroke” is every time you hit (or stroke?) a key on your keyboard. Kpm is also sometimes referred to as characters per minute (cpm).

Given the nature of data entry jobs, you would most commonly be entering numeric data with one hand. This is why pay rates are often quoted in kpm as opposed to the more common measure of wpm.

To challenge the brain a little, you might also see keywords per hour (kph) instead of kpm. So just get the calculator out and divide kph by 60 to get kpm. For example, 9,000 kph will be 150 kpm (9,000 divided by 60).

Here’s a bit more of a tricky one. How do you convert kph into wph?

Keystrokes per hour (Kph) divided by 60 will give you keystrokes per minute (wpm).
Kpm divided by 5 will give you words per minute.

Let’s use the example above again.

So 9,000 kph will be 150 kpm (9,000 divided by 60).

150kpm divided by 5 is 30 words per minute.

So 9,000kph = 30wpm.

Kpm is often a lot faster than wpm because it is a measure of how many type you hit (or stroke) a key on the keyboard as opposed to how fast you can type full words in a minute.

Phew. That was a lot of new terms and a bit of math to get your brain juices flowing.

Let me summarise the terms for you here:

  • Words per minute (wpm): How many words you can type with both hands in a minute.
  • Keystrokes per minute (kpm): How many times you can hit a key on a keyboard with only one hand in a minute.
  • Characters per minute (cpm): How many characters you can type per minute. Essentially the same as (kpm).
  • Keystroke per hour (kph): Kpm times 60.

Cool, got those?

Now data entry job pages will make more sense. I know they used to look like a foreign language before I understood these terms.

So what kpm/cpm rate should a beginner aim for?

If you are looking to work from home doing data entry, you should aim for about 200 kpm. If you aren’t sure how fast you can type, you can find out here.

Tip: Make sure you are using a proper keyboard with the numerical keypad on the right hand side. The first time I tried the test, I was on a laptop and my score for numerical entry was just dismal.
