How to Start a Blog Business Correctly So You Actually Make Money

How to Start a Successful Blog Business and Make Money

If your Pinterest feed is anything like mine, it is filled with pins telling you that you can make money blogging.

But how do you create a successful blog?

Where do you even start?

In this guide, I will show you the exact things I did to start my own blog. Blogging is how I plan to escape the rat race and spend more quality time at home with my kids. Although I’m not yet in a position to leave my job, blogging has already changed my life. It has open my eyes to the possibility, to the freedom that a successful blogging business can bring.

For me it is quality time to spend with my kids so I don’t miss any memories. For you, it might be the freedom to travel the world.

By following these simple steps, you will be able to start a blog in no time and set it up the right way to start earning money from day one.

I am not going to be honest with you.

If you want to build a successful blogging business, it will take hard work. This is definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme and anyone trying to sell you the golden ticket that will make you $10,000 a month with no work is just flat out lying.

While getting your blogging business up and running will take you less than an hour (if that), building a successful blogging business that will earn you money will take time and consistent effort.

But the good news is,  it is possible to make money blogging, and I will show you how.

How to Start a Blog Business in 7 Easy Steps

#1 Step: Pick Your Blog Niche (i.e. Topic)

When I first started my blog business I didn’t give this first step much thought. I was a bit of an eager beaver and just jumped in head first.

I thought, just take action and figure it out later.

The big wall I always hit was getting sick of the topic before I really got much traction with my blog.

So I would highly recommend that you pick a niche or a topic that you love or are passionate about.

Ask yourself:

  • What are you interested in?
  • What are you good at?

If you don’t have passion to fuel you for the first few months, you will just crash and burn like I did.

And once make a list and narrow down a few niches/topics that you are interested in, you need to look at: whether the niche is going to make money.

If you are blogging to make money (I’m assuming you do if you are reading this post), you need to solve a problem that people have.

People don’t want to read about your life, unless it will help them in some way. Let’s be honest, unless you are a Kardarshian only your mom would care about the details of your life.

If we are honest, we are mostly concerned with ourselves and the issues in our lives. We jump online to look for answers to our problems.

And when we stumble upon a blog that helps us solve our problems, like “what to buy my husband for his birthday”, we receive value and might:

  • Buy a product they recommend, or
  • Visit their blog again the next time when I want an answer to my problem.

If you want a bit more details on how to pick a niche, I recommend checking out this video tutorial.

#2 Step: Start off on the Right Platform

If you want to start a successful blog business, then you need to set up a self-hosted WordPress site.

A domain name typically costs $10-$15 per year and basic hosting can start from around $5 a month. So we aren’t talking crazy start-up costs.

The truth is, you are not going to be able to make money from a free blog for these reasons:

  • When you use a free service, you DO NOT own your blog or your website content
  • Your blog name will not look professional and people might not view your blog or content seriously
  • Affiliate marketing programs may not approve your application if you are not self-hosted, limiting your ability to monetize your blog

#3 Step: Buy Hosting For Your Blog

Although is free, you will need to host your files on a server. This is storage for the content of your website.

If you are going to treat your blog as a business, then you MUST pay for hosting.

Reasons Why You Should Use SiteGround

#1 Reason: SiteGround has the best support: They pick up the phone immediately!

As a newbie I found this absolutely invaluable.

My original host was just horrible and it took hours to resolve queries and to get my website up and running. I almost gave up before I got started!

Here are the results of Siteground compared with real accounts on 12 of the most popular web hosts on the market: Bluehost, HostGator, iPage, Fatcow, Justhost, AsmallOrange, InMotion, WebhostingHub, Arvixe, GoDaddy, GreenGeeks and A2Hosting.

Faster loading time for your website means better ranking on Search Engines and more traffic.

#3 Reason: Siteground keeps your website safer than the other 12 of the most popular web hosts on the market:

It’s the best affordable hosting for beginners at just $3.95/month if you are just starting out and you have limited resources to invest in your blog.
Siteground has 3 plans to choose from.

When you are just starting out, I would suggest going with the basic Startup Plan.

That will be more than sufficient for you.

Click here, to choose your package,

I note that unlike other hosting providers, the discounted price is valid for any initial period chosen during the sign up process.

So you don’t have to sign up for a minimum 12 month period to get the $3.95 per month price.

However, I strongly suggest you purchase at least a 12-month hosting plan to give your blogging business a good go. Remember I said this is not a get-rich-quick scheme and you don’t want to have to decide every month if you still want to do this blogging thing.

If you have decided to build a successful blogging business, then give it at least 12 months.

You also don’t want to forget to renew your plan and risk bringing your website down and losing business.

#4 Step: Pick a Domain Name

Domain name is just basically the name of your website.

Now that you have picked your blog topic/niche, you have to pick a name of your website.

You can either pick something related to your blog topic or something brandable.

For example, if you decide to start a blog on paleo eating you might call it,

An example of something brandable would be like Apple or Twitter. It’s short, snappy and memorable but tells you nothing about what the company does.

Either way you decide to go, here are some top tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep it short – its more memorable
  • Make it easy to spell – make it easy for people to come back to your blog. If they can’t remember how to spell it, they will try a few times and then give up.
  • Aim to get a “.com” domain – these tend to rank best on Search Engines.

If you are struggling to find a name, write down lots of words that describe what you want your blog to be about. Then hit up your close friends to test them out to see how brandable or catchy they sound.

I started this blog with the aim of escaping the rat race and helping others do the same, so I came up with Escape The Rat Race.

Lastly, you will want to see if the domain name is available.

If you are buying a new domain name, then click on ‘register new domain name’.

If you have already bought one and want to bring it over to Siteground, then select ‘I already have a domain”.

Siteground allows free website transfers.

Siteground hosting comes with a free SSL certificate which is usually about $15 with other hosts per year. This makes you website more secure and Google Chrome displays a warning that your site is not secure if you don’t have this certificate. So all good, your visitors won’t be scared off by that warning.

Then confirm you have read Siteground’s terms of service and select ‘Pay Now”.

#6 Step: Install WordPress

And now that you have a hosting platform, you are ready to install WordPress!

Siteground has a built-in wizard that makes it super easy to get your WordPress website setup.

#7 Step: Select A Theme

Now that you have WordPress set up, you will need to pick a theme.

What is a theme?

A theme determines how your blog will look. It provides the framework to create the styling of your website.

Most themes will provide you with:

· page layout

· colors

· font styling

· widget locations

· navigation menus

There are lots of great free themes available with WordPress here.

Just chose one to begin and you can easily change it later.

Access install theme functionality in your WP admin

The first thing you need to do when you want to install a new WordPress theme is to login to your site admin page.

Making your blog pretty

If you are on a budget (like I was) a free theme is more than sufficient to start with.

You can customise your site with one of the thousands of WordPress themes available online.

I have been through quite a few free themes and was last using Savona before I switched to a paid theme.

Some other great free themes include:

– Kale

– Illdy

– Activello

There are also premium themes that cost money to buy.

I am definitely of the opinion that you get what you pay for, and a site with a premium theme will always look more professional and more aesthetically pleasing.

I personally use the Florence premium theme from Solopine and love the look and the level of customization it gives me.

And the most popular premium them amongst top bloggers seems to be the Genesis theme.

However, if you don’t want to put all your money into your blog right now, a free themes will do the job for now.

Other Blogger Tools

Here are a few other tools that I regularly use as a blogger to manage my site, grow my traffic, and improve the way things run.

#1: Canva

Canva is the site that I create all my graphics, Pinterest images and marketing materials on.

It’s fantastic, and the free version is awesome.

It saves my brand colours and allows me to create professional looking graphics.

#2: BoardBooster

This is a fantastic Pinterest scheduling tool with a looping feature so that you can fully automate your pinning activity.

We know that Pinterest loves it if you pin sporadically throughout the day rather than a lot of pins all at once. But who has the time to be on Pinterest all day?

I use BoardBooster to pin my own content to various group boards which increases the exposure of my pins. I just pin to one of my secret boards and can then forget about it.

BoardBooster does all the work and rewards me with lots of traffic to my blog!

BoardBooster also has a free trial, so you can try it out for yourself before having to commit to a payment plan.

Wait, I don’t have a Pinterest Business Account yet

If you aren’t familiar with Pinterest or haven’t set up a Pinterest Business Account yet, that’s all good.

That was me when I first got started.

I knew Pinterest was a great source of traffic but I had no idea how to tap into it.

Then I stumbled upon Mom blogger, McKinzie who took her brand new blog from 0-20,000 monthly page views in three months. Plus, she made passive income of nearly $2,000 from her blogs in the first 90 days.

With those results I knew I had to learn from her!

How to monetize your blog

Starting a blogging business means we aren’t in it just as a hobby, we actually want to make money!

Affiliate marketing is one of the number one ways many bloggers make an income. The best part is that it’s essentially passive income.

For example, if I have tried a product and absolutely love it I will write a post raving about a it and link to that product so others can enjoy it too!

And when someone purchases the product on your recommendation, you earn a commission, which is a sweet bonus!

I use affiliate programs to recommend the services I already use as a blogger and anything else I think my readers will truly find of value. Don’t be that person that tries to make a quick buck by recommending rubbish products that pay good commissions.

I would strongly suggest only recommending products you love. This will enable your readers to trust your recommendations and brand. Don’t sacrifice the long term reputation of your brand for a quick buck.

I learnt all about Affiliate Marketing from a blogger who knows her stuff and I would fully recommend her Affiliate Marketing course. Its one of the most detailed courses I’ve found on the market and she has results that I want to achieve!

    Hey there,

I would like to appreciate the valuable information and the specific steps with the best programs to use to get a quality blog up and running.

I am not quite a techy person and I have seen there is a lot of complicated process of buying a domain name, adding WordPress and getting it all under the hosting program you recommend.

Is there an easier way to do all this without having to go through all the technicalities? I would really appreciate.

      Hi Dave

      Actually there is.

I currently use a platform that is a one-stop shop for online entrepreneurs. It allows you to build a website by filling in a form! And it takes less than 30 seconds to get up and running.

You can check out if the website name you want is still available below:
