FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO START A “MONEY MAKING BLOG BUSINESS”!
If your Pinterest feed is anything like mine, it is filled with pins telling you that you can make money blogging.
But how do you create a successful blog?
Where do you even start?
In this guide, I will show you the exact things I did to start my own blog. Blogging is how I plan to escape the rat race and spend more quality time at home with my kids. Although I’m not yet in a position to leave my job, blogging has already changed my life. It has open my eyes to the possibility, to the freedom that a successful blogging business can bring.
For me it is quality time to spend with my kids so I don’t miss any memories. For you, it might be the freedom to travel the world.
By following these simple steps, you will be able to start a blog in no time and set it up the right way to start earning money from day one.
I am not going to be honest with you.
If you want to build a successful blogging business, it will take hard work. This is definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme and anyone trying to sell you the golden ticket that will make you $10,000 a month with no work is just flat out lying.
While getting your blogging business up and running will take you less than an hour (if that), building a successful blogging business that will earn you money will take time and consistent effort.
But the good news is, it is possible to make money blogging, and I will show you how.
How to Start a Blog Business in 7 Easy Steps
#1 Step: Pick Your Blog Niche (i.e. Topic)
When I first started my blog business I didn’t give this first step much thought. I was a bit of an eager beaver and just jumped in head first.
I thought, just take action and figure it out later.
The big wall I always hit was getting sick of the topic before I really got much traction with my blog.
So I would highly recommend that you pick a niche or a topic that you love or are passionate about.
- What are you interested in?
- What are you good at?
If you don’t have passion to fuel you for the first few months, you will just crash and burn like I did.
And once make a list and narrow down a few niches/topics that you are interested in, you need to look at: whether the niche is going to make money.
If you are blogging to make money (I’m assuming you do if you are reading this post), you need to solve a problem that people have.
People don’t want to read about your life, unless it will help them in some way. Let’s be honest, unless you are a Kardarshian only your mom would care about the details of your life.
If we are honest, we are mostly concerned with ourselves and the issues in our lives. We jump online to look for answers to our problems.
And when we stumble upon a blog that helps us solve our problems, like “what to buy my husband for his birthday”, we receive value and might:
- Buy a product they recommend, or
- Visit their blog again the next time when I want an answer to my problem.
If you want a bit more details on how to pick a niche, I recommend checking out this video tutorial.
#2 Step: Start off on the Right Platform
If you want to start a successful blog business, then you need to set up a self-hosted WordPress site.
A domain name typically costs $10-$15 per year and basic hosting can start from around $5 a month. So we aren’t talking crazy start-up costs.
The truth is, you are not going to be able to make money from a free blog for these reasons:
- When you use a free service, you DO NOT own your blog or your website content
- Your blog name will not look professional and people might not view your blog or content seriously
- Affiliate marketing programs may not approve your application if you are not self-hosted, limiting your ability to monetize your blog
#3 Step: Buy Hosting For Your Blog
Although WordPress.org is free, you will need to host your files on a server. This is storage for the content of your website.
If you are going to treat your blog as a business, then you MUST pay for hosting.
Reasons Why You Should Use SiteGround
#1 Reason: SiteGround has the best support: They pick up the phone immediately!
As a newbie I found this absolutely invaluable.
My original host was just horrible and it took hours to resolve queries and to get my website up and running. I almost gave up before I got started!
Here are the results of Siteground compared with real accounts on 12 of the most popular web hosts on the market: Bluehost, HostGator, iPage, Fatcow, Justhost, AsmallOrange, InMotion, WebhostingHub, Arvixe, GoDaddy, GreenGeeks and A2Hosting.
#2 Reason: Siteground is faster than all the other 12 most popular web hosts on the market: Bluehost, HostGator, iPage, Fatcow, Justhost, AsmallOrange, InMotion, WebhostingHub, Arvixe, GoDaddy, GreenGeeks and A2Hosting
Faster loading time for your website means better ranking on Search Engines and more traffic.
#3 Reason: Siteground keeps your website safer than the other 12 of the most popular web hosts on the market:
It’s the best affordable hosting for beginners at just $3.95/month if you are just starting out and you have limited resources to invest in your blog.
Siteground has 3 plans to choose from.
When you are just starting out, I would suggest going with the basic Startup Plan.
That will be more than sufficient for you.
Click here, to choose your package,
I note that unlike other hosting providers, the discounted price is valid for any initial period chosen during the sign up process.
So you don’t have to sign up for a minimum 12 month period to get the $3.95 per month price.
However, I strongly suggest you purchase at least a 12-month hosting plan to give your blogging business a good go. Remember I said this is not a get-rich-quick scheme and you don’t want to have to decide every month if you still want to do this blogging thing.
If you have decided to build a successful blogging business, then give it at least 12 months.
You also don’t want to forget to renew your plan and risk bringing your website down and losing business.
#4 Step: Pick a Domain Name
Domain name is just basically the name of your website.
Now that you have picked your blog topic/niche, you have to pick a name of your website.
You can either pick something related to your blog topic or something brandable.
For example, if you decide to start a blog on paleo eating you might call it, focusedonpaleo.com.
An example of something brandable would be like Apple or Twitter. It’s short, snappy and memorable but tells you nothing about what the company does.
Either way you decide to go, here are some top tips to keep in mind:
- Keep it short – its more memorable
- Make it easy to spell – make it easy for people to come back to your blog. If they can’t remember how to spell it, they will try a few times and then give up.
- Aim to get a “.com” domain – these tend to rank best on Search Engines.
If you are struggling to find a name, write down lots of words that describe what you want your blog to be about. Then hit up your close friends to test them out to see how brandable or catchy they sound.
I started this blog with the aim of escaping the rat race and helping others do the same, so I came up with Escape The Rat Race.
Lastly, you will want to see if the domain name is available.
If you are buying a new domain name, then click on ‘register new domain name’.
If you have already bought one and want to bring it over to Siteground, then select ‘I already have a domain”.
Siteground allows free website transfers.
#5 Step: Review and Complete
Once you have selected your hosting package and domain name, just check through your details before proceeding for payment.
Check your plan says: StartUp
Period: 12 months
And if you want to keep your costs as low as possible, remember to uncheck SG Site Scanner. You can save $19.80/year.
Siteground hosting comes with a free SSL certificate which is usually about $15 with other hosts per year. This makes you website more secure and Google Chrome displays a warning that your site is not secure if you don’t have this certificate. So all good, your visitors won’t be scared off by that warning.
Then confirm you have read Siteground’s terms of service and select ‘Pay Now”.
#6 Step: Install WordPress
And now that you have a hosting platform, you are ready to install WordPress!
Siteground has a built-in wizard that makes it super easy to get your WordPress website setup.
And if you get stuck at any time just open Live Chat and their technical support will walk you through the process.
To install WordPress using the SiteGround Wizard, first access your Customer Area.
Once you signup for SiteGround’s WordPress hosting package you will receive your sign in info to login via email.
When you login to your Customer Area for the first time, you will see a pop-up asking you if you want to Start a new website on your account.
Select that option and click on the WordPress button.
