I stumbled upon Music Xray a few months ago and was intrigued by this platform that offers music fans an opportunity to check out new artists and make some money in the process.
The Quick Low Down
Name: Music Xray or MusicXray.com
Owner: Mike McCready
Overall Rating: 2 out of 5
While this is a cool platform to discover new artists and listen to music, you won’t earn very much at all!
So what is Music Xray.com?
Music Xray is platform which connects music artists, music fans, talent buyers, agents directors, publishers, music supervisors and music podcasters.
It’s founder Mike McCready (yes, the lead guitarist from Pearl Jam) created this platform to help budding music artists to get their music in front of a decision maker a lot faster.
If you are a budding music artist, you submit your music for review and gain some valuable feedback from potential fans.
If you are a music fan, then get to listen to and discover new artists (before any of your friends) and get paid a small amount of money for doing so.
Since, I’m not a budding music artist, this review is focused on Music Xray as a music fan’s money making opportunity.
So how do you get started with Music Xray?
When you jump on Music Xray’s website, you will have the option to sign up as a music fan.
Once you click on this button you will be directed to the video below which explains how “Fan Match” works. This is how you can earn money with Music Xray.
As a ‘music fan’, Music Xray wants to know all about what kind of music you like so they can match you with new music that you are most likely to enjoy.
If you have very vast music tastes then you are out of luck. Music Xray only allows you to select up to five categories of music and up to 10 of your favorite bands.
Once you have informed Music Xray of your preferences then you are done! The waiting game begins for songs to listen to. Music Xray say you can expect to receive about 3 songs per week.
So how much can you make from Music Xray?
Each song you get sent is about 30 second long. Once you’ve finished listening to it, you need to give it a thumbs up or down. You don’t need to write a detailed review or anything.
Once I’d listened to the song and given my thumbs up (I did really enjoy the first song I was sent), I was awarded 10 cents into my inbox.
Ok, so at an average of 10 cents per song, that’s an earnings potential of 30 cents a week.
Let that sink in for a minute.
That’s pretty sad.
It’s hardly even pocket money territory.
And to even cash money out via PayPal, you need $20!
Let’s do the math. So if you are making 30 cents a week, it will take you 67 weeks – that’s more than a year to cash out!
I suspect many people give up before the 67-week mark and never cash out.
And sometimes you don’t even get paid for listening to a song
Because Music Xray only pays a certain number of people to listen to a song, you might not get paid after listening to a song if the quota has already been filed.
This is similar to filing in online surveys, where there is a certain quota. So that means even if you click on the link you receive right away you might still be too late if other people beat you to it.
What annoyed me though was that you only find out after you’ve listened to the song.
So is Music Xray worth your time?
If you are a huge big music fan and love the idea of discovering new artists, then perhaps.
But if you are looking to make money from this, then this is NOT worth it, don’t waste your time!
There are a few fake reviews online claiming you can earn up to $10 a day. We’ve done the math, that is just not possible with the number of songs you are getting sent a day.
Remember, Music Xray said you can expect to be sent 3 songs per WEEK. And you can expect to get paid 10 cents per song. So 3 times 10 cents = 30 cents per WEEK. That is far from $10 a day. Not even close.
A better way to make money online
If you are looking to make some pocket money online, then I suggest you try online survey sites like Swagbucks or Opinion Outpost. Even these sites won’t give you $10 a day, but it will be MUCH better than 30 cents a week. There are also more ways to earn with Swagbucks, like watching videos, playing game and completing small tasks.
To make decent part-time, or even full-time income online though, you will need to put in a lot more work – but it’s totally possible for anyone.
It’s possible to make money online from something you are already passionate about. That’s how I started making money online. With the industry estimated at $6.8 billion, there is enough in the pie for everyone.
If you are passionate about music, you could carve out a specific niche within the music industry (like how to play the guitar for beginners for example), set up your own website with your unique angle that speaks specifically to your target audience to promote all kinds of music related products your target audience would be interested in.
The fancy term for this is Affiliate marketing but it is basically earning by helping people find what they want online.
That is how I have personally found success doing online marketing. If you want to give building your own online business a go, you can check out my favorite online business community and training platform here.
